Before Mel Gibson was arrested for DUI's in the Hollywood hills and built churches in Malibu, he directed a film, The Passion of the Christ, in 2004 that left people stunned with a new vision of the bible and the brutality that Jesus Christ endured.
Nothing like a movie to make an impact and it still does four years later. The images are riveting.
As always, Youtube has got all sorts of video, but this short video, with much of the violence not included, does a wonderful job at handling Mary's personal struggle. If you're Christian, Muslim, Pagan, or whatever, this movie and this video will have you looking beyond the issue of religion and staring into the face of humanity. Sometimes you just have to wonder when will the violence stop.
Who's going to win? What will everyone be wearing? Who shows up with whom! All the gossip & sightseeing is part of the fun. Find out who Modern Girl Style will be rooting for this Sunday.
Modern Girl Style Pick for BEST ACTRESS
Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth II: Only an actress like as Cate Blanchett can carry this film. She is a golden girl of Hollywood & needs to be awarded for her tremendous acting talent. What else can I say? She's a legend!
Modern Girl Style PickforBEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Tilda Swinton in Michael Clayton: I've been a fan of Tilda Swinton since I saw her in Female Perversions. She is talent that needs to be better tapped by Hollywood.
Modern Girl Style PickforBEST ACTOR
George Clooney in Michael Clayton: Wow! I didn't know that Clooney could act until I saw him in this amazing film. Didn't anyone else get sick of his made for 13 year-old boys movies set in Vegas. I'm so over his cool guy character. He rocked in Michael Clayton!
Modern Girl Style PickforBEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Casey Affleck in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford: I just saw Casey Affleck in Gone Baby Gone last night & the only thing that really stuck was how great Casey's acting was. Too bad his brother butchered an amazing book by Dennis Lehame. I honestly couldn't believe what a poor job Ben Affleck did! Read the book & avoid the movie. Anyhow, Casey Affleck has got a future in Hollywood even if he doesn't win Sunday.
Clips for the upcoming Spike Jones film, Where the Wild Things Are, have been pulled from the web faster than you can PB&J. Here is one of the last source, check it out before it vanishes! Of course, this could be a fake clip. It's up to you to be the judge:
Put aside the recent remakes of 70s crime movies, like American Gangster, and get a dose of the real thing!
The Conversation is a a 1974 film made by Francis Ford Coppola while he was between The Godfather I and II. If that doesn't get you interested, watch this film trailer:
With a little more investigation into this movie Modern Girl Style found out that this movie was written in the sixties, but released right at the time of the Watergate Scandal.
Hollywood always manages to tie into explosive politics! Coppola himself cited the influence of Antonioni's amazing film, Blow-Up. And the influences are undeniable! This film is like an audio version of Blow-Up.
It gets even better when Gene Hackman's life is threaten by a very young and handsome Harrison Ford. Swanky room..I think that'd still fly today for as a hip lounge or bar.
So, if you're feeling paranoid & wondering if someone is watching or listening...maybe you need to rent The Conversation. It'll only help to boost the fears! Gene Hackman might be the first to point out that someone is following your everymove.
Now, go behind the scenes with Coppola talking about The Conversation:
Ah...It's hard to tell. I mean Will Ferrel knew a fake Santa when he met one. But, I think I might have to say that the real Santa is from Miracle on 34th Street because he knows how to whip it!!! HAHA!
Modern Girl Style wishes you a warm & beautiful Christmas Eve!
Welcome to the last of 2007! That means that Hollywood & others are throwing out the last of their movies to try and contend for an Oscar in 2008. That translates to lots of films to watch! Where do you get started? As usual, Modern Girl Style always recommends to follow your heart, but there are three movies that many people are really excited to check out. Here goes:
I Am Legend
Will Smith on the Movie & he sounds extremely heartfelt about this project!
Atonement
Atonement, like most things, this started as a book. Ian McEwan's book, Atonement, has been one of the most prolific novels I've ever read and that might mean a really lousy movie. But, we shall see, right?
On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony
Tallis sees her older sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge
into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching
Cecilia is their housekeeper's son Robbie Turner, a childhood friend
who, along with Briony's sister, has recently graduated from Cambridge.
By the end of that day the lives of all three will have been changed
forever. Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundary they had never
before dared to approach and will have become victims of the younger
girl's scheming imagination, and Briony will have committed a dreadful
crime, the guilt for which will colour her entire life.
The Kite Runner
A movie about two kids growing up in Afghanistan doesn't sound like it
has the makings to be a huge blockbuster. But the film is based on the
best-selling novel, "The Kite Runner," by Khaled Hosseini.
The novel,
which gave many Americans their first detailed glimpse at life in
Afghanistan following the Soviet invasion and eventual rise of the
Taliban, became an instant hit with many book clubs, helping to keep
the paperback version near the top of The New York Times
paperback best-seller list for the past 129 weeks. And Hosseini's
latest novel is currently the best-selling hardcover fiction book. So
clearly, there is a large audience there for fans of Hosseini.
So
will the book's millions of readers come out and see the film?
Adaptations of blockbuster books have done pretty well in recent years,
as the "Harry Potter" films and the movie based on "The Da Vinci Code"
have all been big hits.
But one possible problem for "The Kite
Runner" is that it has no major stars and will go up against "American
Gangster" and the animated film "Bee Movie." Nonetheless, people should
not underestimate the possibility that women who loved the book will
turn out in droves for the film.
Now, turn your cellphone off and just add popcorn!
